In my site-specific installation, Of Breath and Tears exhibited at the Glass Pavilion of the Eretz Israel Museum (MUZA) as part of the Biennale of Arts and Design, I explore the intimate relationship between the glass vessel and the human body.
This project draws inspiration from Robert Fludd’s 17th-century cosmological engravings. These engravings depict the universe contained within us. The project treats glass as both a conceptual and sensorial medium. Hybrid glass sculptures are suspended above a shallow pool of raw sand, which is the foundational element of glass making. These sculptures draw inspiration from ancient Roman lacrimaria. Lacrimaria are funerary vessels once buried to store the tears of mourners.
To bridge this 3,000-year-old metaphor with our contemporary reality, I fused two vessels into a singular hourglass form:
One pointing downward, acknowledging constant loss and our collective grief. One facing upward, capturing light, resilience, and the vital forces of life and breath.
As an architect and designer, I am deeply drawn to the moment of transformation in glass making. When you blow into molten glass, a fleeting breath is frozen in time. This creates a structure that is both delicate and resilient. It is a quiet gesture of renewal in a fragile world.
